In 2025-2026, significant changes took place in the UK driver’s license system, including the introduction of digital rights and new rules for novice drivers.
Key innovations of 2025-2026
Digital Driver’s License: An app launched in 2025 GOV.UK A wallet that allows you to store a digital version of your rights on your smartphone. It does not replace a plastic card, but is an additional option for confirming identity and management rights.
New rules for booking tests (starting in spring 2026):
Starting on May 12, 2026, candidates must book a practical exam on their own; instructors can no longer do this for students.
The number of changes in the booking is limited to two attempts.
The transfer of the test is possible only in the 3 examination centers closest to the original one.
Step-up rights in Northern Ireland: Starting in October 2026, restrictions will be introduced for new drivers, including a mandatory 6-month training period and limits on passenger transportation at night.
