In 2024, the state of Michigan began the transition to a new design of driver’s licenses (DL) and government identification cards (ID).

The main changes in the new version:
Enhanced security: Modern security features have been introduced to prevent counterfeiting.

Design: The appearance of the cards has been updated, including new graphic elements.

Matching the REAL ID:

The new REAL ID cards are now marked with a star inside the silhouette of the state of Michigan.
In the old version, the star was located in a golden circle.
Transition period: Old samples remain valid until their expiration date. Gradual replacement occurs when updating or replacing a document.

Important dates:
May 7, 2025: The deadline after which a document conforming to the REAL ID standard will be required for domestic flights in the United States and visits to certain federal facilities.

Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL): The improved license with the American flag badge already meets the requirements of the REAL ID, so it is not necessary to change them.

A Driver’s License (DL) in Michigan is usually issued for up to 4 years and expires on the driver’s birthday.

The main features of the validity period:
Standard Term: For U.S. citizens and permanent residents (Green Cards), rights are often tied to a 4-year renewal cycle.

REAL ID: If you receive or renew REAL ID rights (with a gold star), they are also valid for up to 4 years, but their issuance depends on confirmation of legal presence.

Temporary rights (Temporary Permit): A Temporary Instruction Permit is usually valid until the exam is completed, but it has its own validity period (usually several months), after which it must be extended.

You can renew your rights online, by mail, or in person at the office of the Secretary of State (SOS).
