Texas Just Dropped a New Driver’s License Design — and It’s Way For Good Job
Texas has rolled out a fresh new look for its driver’s licenses, and this time around, the focus is clearly on how it looks and how well it holds up against counterfeiters.
The biggest visual change? Laser engraving. That old gold star is gone — in its place, there’s now a sharp black star laser-engraved right in the upper right corner, marking the card as REAL ID compliant. And laser engraving isn’t just for looks — it’s practically impossible to replicate without serious industrial equipment, which is exactly the point.
The color scheme has also gotten a makeover. The old design was loud and proud — bold reds and blues that screamed Texas from across the room. The new version tones all that down into something much more muted and understated. Again, this isn’t just a style choice: softer colors actually work better with the security elements printed on the card and make it a nightmare to color-copy accurately.
On top of that, the card itself is now made from tamper-resistant polycarbonate that meets the standards set by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. Basically, all those laser-engraved and printed elements are sealed inside one solid, unified structure — try to peel it apart or mess with it, and it’ll show immediately.
The layout of your personal info has been cleaned up too, making it quicker and easier for anyone checking your ID to read and verify it on the spot.
