


The validity period of documents in Connecticut depends on their type. The state is now switching to longer validity periods for basic certificates.
Driver’s license (Driver’s License)
Ordinary rights: They are issued for 6 or 8 years. The exact time limit is determined by the DMV computer system when issuing or extending.
REAL ID: Usually valid for 8 years.
For drivers 65 years and older: It is possible to apply for a license for 2 years.
“Drive-only” rights: (for persons without resident status) are granted for 3 years.
Identification card (Non-Driver ID)
Term: Like the rights, they are issued for 6 or 8 years (there is a gradual transition to an 8-year cycle).
Cost: $24 for 6 years or $32 for 8 years.
Learner’s Permit
Term: Valid for 2 years from the date of issue or until obtaining full rights.
Important nuances
Birthday: The document usually expires on your birthday.
Renewal: You can start the renewal process 6 months before the expiration date.
Overdue: If the license is overdue for more than 2 years, you will have to take all exams again.
