North Carolina Driver License Rev. 2014

The validity period of a driver’s license (DL) in North Carolina depends on the age of the driver at the time of issue or renewal:

8 years — for drivers aged 18 to 65 years.
5 years — for drivers aged 66 and older.

Important clarifications:
Foreign nationals: If your stay in the United States is limited by law (for example, on a visa), the validity period of your rights usually coincides with the validity period of your immigration documents.

Teenagers: For novice drivers (under the age of 18), there is a Graduated Licensing system, where the terms and levels of rights (Level 1, 2, 3) change as they progress through the training stages.

Grace period: According to the changes adopted in 2025, drivers in North Carolina are given a 2-year grace period to renew their expired licenses (during this time, the rights remain valid for driving).
